The Knitting Gods Hate me or Let Them Eat Soup

I have no pictures for you.

Reason #1- I made a beautiful sweater using a top-down raglan pattern from Knitting Pure and Simple. Then I wove in the ends, and "all" I had to do was block it. I washed it, took it out: It was HUGE. Now it is in a pillow case in the dryer (for the third time) after my useless attempt to shrink it in the bathtub. Then the wash. What am I missing about blocking? The sweater fit fine before. It fit well, which is an accomplishment.

Reason #2 - I've mentioned it before and I still fall for it every time. Socks knit big. One would think 80 sittches on size ones would be too small if anything. Nope, too big. Ripped and going to start over.

So, in an attempt to comfort myself with something I'm fairly certain I can do right, I will make soup tonight. Fingers crossed it doesn't accidentally turn into babyfood or something odd.

UPDATE- The sweater is no longer long, but it is still wide. Ideas? I am very sad.

Not being much of a knitter my only thought is can you take it in some by sewing a seam inside?

Yup, someone, somewhere (I don't remember where, but I'm sure lots of people actually have done this) blogged about this. Machine stitched new side seams and then cut the excess. I have never done it though, sorry.

Did you block the swatch?

I've been reading about sampling.

Some recommend a 24 hr rest for the swatch and some insist you must do whatever you are going to do to the sweater.

Sewing on knitted garments is not hard. Sew a straight seam, zig-zag outside it and then cut.

PS, I'm sad too.

Don't be sad - I saw it yesterday (or was it the day before? I am losing track of time) and I think it looks great!
